Praying to St Patrick
Anyone knowing something about the history of the Isle of Man in the last few hundred years would assume it was an intensely Protestant country. However, its reputed that it took over 200 years to carry out the Reformation here! As always, its practically impossible to find out what ordinary people really felt many years ago and the Manx are no exception. But you can well imagine lots of the Manx regarding the change from the Church of Rome to the Church of England as an irritating development brought on by fanatical foreigners which the Manx had to put up with for the sake of some peace and quiet. This is not to say the Manx were going to sacrifice themselves in the Catholic cause. But traces of Popery hung on here, presumably to the irritation of the Anglican authorities. One such relic was praying to St Patrick (Popery AND those awful Irish!).
A common prayer in the 19th century was Parick, jeeagh orrin! (Patrick, look on us!). When fishermen were clear of the harbour, they said: Dy bannee Parick Noo shin as nyn maatey (May St Patrick bless us and our boat!).
Another prayer was: Parick Noo, vannee yn Ellan ain, dy bannee eh shin as yn baatey, goll magh dy mie, çheet stiagh ny share, lesh bio as marroo sy vaatey (St Patrick, who blessed our Island, may he bless us and our boat, going out well, coming in better with the living and the dead.)

Yn Scaa Goanlyssagh - The Malicious Ghost
Manx people used to believe in Yn Scaa Goanlyssagh - The Malicious Ghost. This was an unusual ghost because it was the spirit of a living person, not a dead one. The Scaa Goanlyssagh was the spirit of someone who had a grudge against someone else and would persecute them by pinching and nipping them when they were in bed at night. The victim could get out of it by calling out the name of the person whose spirit was troubling them - if they knew who was behind it.
Yn Scaa Goanlyssagh was often the spirit of a jilted lover.
The most bizarre power the Malicious Ghost had was to be able to cut the clothes off its victim just as if scissors were used, without the operation being seen or felt!

St Brigids Day
The 1st February is Laal Breeshey, The Feast Day of St Brigid - adapted from the ancient Celtic festival of Imbolc on 1st February when the pre-Christian Brigid was honoured. She was the goddess of many things and the muse who inspired poets.
When Christianity came, people of their own will transferred the powers of the pre-Christian Brigid to the Christian Saint.
On the night of 31st January, Manx people used to stand at their doors holding rushes and saying or singing Vreeshey, Vreeshey, tar gys my hie, tar gys y thie ayms noght... Foshil-jee yn dorrys da Breeshey as lhig da Breeshey çheet stiagh...
- Brigid, Brigid, come to my house, come to my house tonight... Open the door to Brigid and let Brigid come in.. The rushes were then strewn on the floor for the honoured guest to walk on - a very ancient custom indeed.
It was a great honour for Brigid to stay the night - Manx farmers wives used to tidy up the barn and leave a bed and food and drink there all night on 31st January - 1st February in the hope that Brigid would stay there.

The Little People - Mooinjer Veggey
Significantly, there is no word in any of the Gaelic languages for fairy. The word sounds feeble when its applied to our own Mooinjer Veggey - Little Folk, or Ny Fir Shen - Them ones. That great folklore collector of over 100 years ago, William Cashen, recorded that the Manx people believed the fairies were fallen angels, driven out of heaven by Satan (he might have got this idea from somewhere else!).
Cashen said the Little People were called Cloan ny Moyrn (The Children of Pride or The Children of Ambition). When they were driven out of heaven, they fell in equal proportions on the earth, sea and in the air, falling like hail for three days. Cashen hints that the Manx might have picked this story up from Miltons Paradise Lost - or maybe Milton lifted the idea from Manx folklore!
When walking at night-time (always a risky thing to do) Manx people would say the prayer Saue Jee mee veih Cloan ny Moyrn (God save me from the Children of Pride).

New words in Manx
People are quite often surprised when we tell them that new technical terms are not really a big problem in Manx. Theres an official committee which oversees the introduction of such terms - this is Coonseil ny Gaelgey, or the Manx Gaelic Advisory Council. Sometimes people object But youre just making these words up!, not realising that this is exactly what happens in English as well. Somebody made up the word laser, somebody else made up microprocessor and so on.
Occasionally you can take an existing Manx word which has become obsolete, tweek it a bit and use it in the present day for something related to its original meaning. A good example of this is fysseree, which Cregeens 19th century dictionary gives as foreknowledge,..., anticipated knowledge of what is to come to pass. Were now using fysseree to mean data.
I think Cregeen might have been a bit coy over this - other people gave the old meaning of fysseree as knowledge gained by means of the Evil Eye.
Thats what data might be some times!

More speakers of Manx!
The latest census figures (for 2001) have shown a big increase in the numbers of people claiming to speak Manx - almost 1,700, compared with about 640 in 1991 and only 165 in 1961 (the lowest point). Its terrific that 46% of these Manx speakers now are under the age of 19 - this shows a huge change in attitudes to the language. Obviously not all those 1,700 can speak Manx fluently, but it is literally a sea-change to have Manx associated with young people rather than just old people.

Imagine Belfast 2008
Lots of people still think of the Manx language as being of interest only to Manx people. This is no longer the case, as is shown by the numbers of non-Manx people who have come to the Island recently and are studying the language.
In a wider context, I was recently asked to give a talk on Manx Gaelic in Belfast at a so-called winter school - part of Belfasts bid to be named City of European Culture in the year 2008 (the organisation putting the bid together is Imagine Belfast 2008). Part of the reason for wanting someone to talk about Manx would have been the wish to show that there are people who speak another form of Gaelic, which is not Irish and which has not been politicised or made sectarian - the fate which people are working to free the Irish language from in the north of Ireland.

Yussa
If you hear someone say Yussa anywhere on earth, you know straight away theyre from the Isle of Man. Yussa is what Manxmen say to each other - usually as Howre you doin, Yussa!
There are various ways of spelling this word - Yussa, Yessa, Yissa. Its often assumed its from English Yes sir. But its much more likely to come from Manx Gaelic Uss, the emphatic You. This would have been Ussa previously, and thats very likely developed into Yussa.
So, Howre you doin, Yussa! would mean Howre you doin, You! - which I actually heard someone say the other day.

Yussa! and Hey, boy!
We talked last time about what used to be a very common greeting used by men from the Isle of Man - Howre you doin, Yussa! Its pretty likely that Yussa is not from the English Yes-sir (as people often assume) but from Manx Gaelic Uss, the emphatic way of saying You!
These days, Howre you doin, Yussa! has mainly been replaced by Hey, boy!
In a booklet about Manx folklore by William Cashen he said that when Manx fishermen spotted a shoal of fish they would tell other fishermen by shouting in Manx Er-hoh eh, bhoy! - Here it is, boy! (They were keen on the English word boy). Its likely that Er-hoh eh, bhoy! gave us Hey, boy!

A St Patricks Day saying in Manx
This saying is Laal Perick arree, y dow gys e staik as y dooinney gys e lhiabbee - St Patricks Day in the spring, the ox to its stake and the man to his bed.
One explanation of this is that by St Patricks Day it was supper at dark and then to bed for men and animals. No lights were lit after St Patricks Day.
Incidentally, there was a pun on the word for bed - lhiabbee. This sounds like the combination lieh-vee - half-food. Manx people said this showed that half of life should be spent eating and the other half in bed.

The three Gaelic languages
The three Gaelic languages - Manx, Irish and Scottish Gaelic - are closely related to each other. What tends to cut Manx off from the others is its spelling, which is based on that of English - which means it is NOT phonetic! But the spoken languages are close.
Efforts are being made to stress the close historic links between Gaelic Scotland and Ireland - generally ignoring the Isle of Man. A lady visiting the Isle of Man from the Hebrides for the Shennaghys Jiu music festival in Ramsey said the Gaelic nature of the Isle of Man must be one of the worlds best kept secrets. Being a native speaker of Scottish Gaelic, she was amazed to find out she could understand practically every word of Manx when she heard it spoken.
Just to illustrate how close the three languages can be (and this is useful on social occasions), the Manx for Good health is Slaynt vie, the Scottish Gaelic is Slàinte mhath and the Irish is Sláinte.

In Manx, this is Jerdein Frastyl - possibly Charge Thursday, meaning Christs charge or instruction to the apostles. Twigging on
Its likely that the English expression I twigged on (meaning I understood) came from Gaelic - probably from Irish, which has words like Tuigim (I understand). The Manx Toiggym has a slightly different meaning - I will understand.
Its also likely that stuff like Do you dig that? comes from Irish - via America.
Irish An dtuigeann tú? means Do you understand?, something that non-English speaking Irish immigrants would have said a lot in the 19th century. Manx and Scottish Gaelic have very similar expressions - for instance, Manx Cha doiggym (I wont understand).

May Day
The Manx for the month of May is Boaldyn, coming from the name of one of the four major Celtic festivals. Boaldyn or Bealtainn was Anglicised as Belthane. This was a festival of fertility and the arrival of summer. Fire was thought to be a purifying thing at this time - there are records that Manx people were still driving cattle between fires to protect them from evil in the early nineteenth century. Many other May Day superstitions lasted way beyong this time.
One May Day proverb in Manx is: Ta lane doarn dy yoan Mayrt, as lane ynnyd-crou cabbyl dy ushtey er Laa Boaldyn, ny share na lhong lane dy airh as dy argid - A handful of dust in March, and the print of a horseshoe full of water on May Day, is better than a shipful of gold and silver. Manx Gaelic in the USA
In the 19th century, emigration from the Isle of Man led to several thriving Manx communities in the USA, especially in Ohio. The early emigrants knew very little English, so Manx was widely used among them, living on into the early years of the 20th century. In 1855, George Borrow was researching a Manx traditional song in the Isle of Man where a Manxwoman told him her son lived in a village in Ohio where Manx was spoken.
And theres a report of two Manxmen, Jimmy Moore and Jemmy Hudson, who were in Cleveland and talking together in Manx while they worked. The boss was a Hungarian who spoke 5 or 6 languages, but he couldnt make Manx out at all. He asked where the Manxmen came from, and they said the Isle of Man. Never heard of it he said!

Putting a sight on somebody
In recent years, weve seen happen what some may think is a paradox: detailed knowledge of Manx Gaelic in the Isle of Man has increased a lot, while the influence of Manx on the English spoken here has declined. Previously, the incidence of Gaelic words and expressions in English was quite common.
One Manx Gaelic expression that has hung on among older people is to put a sight on someone - that is, to visit them. This is from the Manx cur shilley, putting a sight, as in Ren mee cur shilley er jea - I visited him yesterday (I put a sight on him yesterday).

A Manx proverb
Lots of countries have similar proverbs - for instance, Strike while the iron is hot seems to spread across frontiers. But individual countries tend to have some unique proverbs, or at least unique ways of expressing common thoughts. An example is probably the Manx proverb about bought sense, which is how you say experience in Manx Gaelic:
Ta keeall chionnit yn cheeall share, mannagh vel ee kionnit ro gheyr - Bought sense is the best sense, unless its bought too dearly.
Keeall chionnit (Bought sense) is the Manx for experience, so its slightly tricky to translate this proverb! Another shot might be Experience gives the best wisdom, unless its gained at too high a cost.

Skeet.
Manx Gaelic has some words which are not found in the two other Gaelic languages. These words are mainly from northern English dialect, sometimes inseparable from Norse. One such word is skeet, which most people understand, including recent incomers. Cregeens dictionary gives skeet as a creeping, sneaking fellow. 40-50 years ago, people used to say Had a good skeet? meaning you stared at them in a prying way. The sense seems to have changed now so that skeet means gossip.

Tynwald and Old Midsummer Day
5th July is Tynwald Day and Shenn Laal Ean Bashtey - The Old Feast Day of John the Baptist - also called Old Midsummer Day (the calendar was changed).
Manx people had split feelings on Tynwald Day - they wanted it to be fine weather for Tynwald Fair (more important than the ceremony for lots of people), but for farmers and crofters they often hoped for rain at this time (not this year!). This was expressed in the proverb:
Ta lane crou-cabbyl dy ushtey Laal Ean feeu mayl Vannin - A horseshoe print full of water on St Johns Day is worth all the rent in the Isle of Man.

The Irishmen and the didgeridoo
A PhD student, Dymphna Lonergan, is saying that the native Australian musical instrument the didgeridoo was given this name by the early Irish settlers in Australia. A lot of these had Irish as their first language and the suggestion is that digeridoo came from the Irish Gaelic dúdaire dubh, where dúdaire means a crooner and dubh means black - so, black crooner.
To find if this is right, the obvious thing is to find what the native Australians call the instrument. If none of their words corresponds to didgeridoo then the Irish may have it.
