‘Old’ and ‘New’ Festivals
The change in the calendar in the distant past meant that people ended up with two separate dates to commemorate a particular festival. For instance, 5th January was Shenn Laa Nollick, Old Christmas Day - still recognised in parts of the Isle of Man until about 100 years ago.
There is a proverb connected with this day: ‘My ta kay er ny sleityn Shenn Laa Nollick, bee palçhey skeddan goll’ - ‘If there’s mist on the mountains on Old Christmas Day, there’ll be plenty of herring going’.
And 12th January is Shenn Laa Nollick Beg - Old New Year’s Day (‘Old Little Christmas Day’).

The Bee Gees and ‘Ellan Vannin’
The sad death of Maurice Gibb reminded me of the great recording they did of ‘Ellan Vannin’ the unofficial Manx national anthem. Not long after this was released, someone in the Isle of Man Postal Authority contacted me and suggested that the Bee Gees might be willing to do another recording of ‘Ellan Vannin’, but this time in Manx.
I did a new translation into Manx of the song and this was sent off to the Bee Gees by the Postal Authority, along with guidance on the pronunciation of the Manx. What a pity we didn’t hear any more!

Doom and Hope in saying.

Saturday is 25th January is Laa’l Noo Paayl - St Paul’s Feast Day.
Like most saints’ days, this has a saying (a long one) connected with it:
‘Laa’l Paayl dorrinagh, geayee / Genney er y teihll as baase mooar sleih. /
Laa’l Paayl aalin as glen, / Palçhey er y teihll dy arroo as meinn.’
(‘St Paul’s day - stormy and windy, / Want in the world and great death of people. /
St Paul’s day fine and clear, / Plenty of corn and meal in the world’.)

Unlike some Manx sayings, this one has a bright side to it!

The Old Feast Day of St Brigid

12th February is the Old Feast Day of St Brigid - it was also known as the Day of Caillagh ny Gueshag - the Old Woman of the Charms. She was a witch who survived being thrown into the sea off Ireland and floated to the Isle of Man, landing here on the morning of 12th February. The weather was fine, so she was able to gather sticks to make a fire to dry herself. The spring that year was wet.
The belief grew up that if Caillagh ny Gueshag was not able to gather sticks on the morning of 12th February, the spring would be fine, and vice versa.
So, fine weather on the morning of 12th February means a wet spring, and vice versa.

International recognition for Manx Gaelic

Last Friday it was announced that the Isle of Man Government had agreed to extend the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages to the Island. This Charter is organised by the Council of Europe.
In a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office, the Manx Government confirmed that it recognises the value of Manx Gaelic and that the language should be protected and promoted as ‘an essential feature of the Island’s culture and heritage’. This is also in line with the Government’s plan for 2003 to 2006, which aims to promote the national identity of the Isle of Man.

St Matthew and St Matthias

In Manx, ‘Mian’ means both ‘Matthew’ and ‘Matthias’. 24th February is the Feast Day of St Matthias, or Laa’l Mian in Manx.
21st September is the Feast Day of St Matthew - Laa’l Mian again in Manx.
There’s a saying that covers both saints’ days:
‘Laa’l Mian carragh.
Skaayn arroo
Syn ’ouyr, as marroo
Ny eayin syn arragh’.

‘Scurvy Feast Day of Mian.
Blowing the corn down
In the autumn, and killing
The lambs in the spring.’

Smoke abatement in the 1830’s.

You tend to think of smoke abatement as a recent activity. However, I came across an act of Tynwald from about 1835, entirely written in Manx, which required people operating furnaces, boilers and so on to make each one of these to ‘burn and destroy its own smoke’ (‘lostey as stroie yn jaagh lesh hene’) to cut down emissions. Sensibly, people would only be fined (pretty heavily) if they hadn’t make reasonable efforts to carry out this near impossible order.

St Patrick’s Day

St Patrick features prominently in Manx traditions and folklore.
A saying connected with St Patrick’s Day is:
‘Laa’l Parick arree, yn dow gys e staik as y dooinney gys e lhiabbee’ - ‘St Patrick’s Feast Day in the spring, the ox to its stake and the man to his bed.’
On St Patrick’s Day when it got dark, the ox was supposed to be tied to the stake and the man was supposed to go to bed - it was supper at dark and then to bed for both of them. No light was expected to be lit after St Patrick’s Day.

Mary’s Feast Day of the Whisper

25th March in Manx is Laa’l Moirrey ny Sannish - Mary’s Feast Day of the Whisper, or the Annunciation - the announcement of the incarnation by the Angel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary.
This day was also known in Manx as Çhaghter da’n Voidyn Moirrey - Messenger to the Virgin Mary.
Religious terms in Manx possibly give a hint that the Manx themselves were relaxed about the Reformation, which some have said took 200 years to carry out in the Isle of Man!

April Fools and the Tarroo-Ushtey

Making April Fools does not seem to have been a particularly Manx custom, but the custom was certainly well established by the 19th century. For instance, on 1st April 1859 somebody reported that there was a tarroo-ushtey (a water-bull - a terrifying supernatural animal) in a field at Ballure. Hundreds of people went out from Ramsey to see the tarroo-ushtey, but were disappointed - there was nothing there.

Manx surnames: Quilliam

A lot of Manx surnames start with the letters C, K or Q - this comes from the Gaelic for ‘son’, which is ‘mac’. Knock off the ‘m’ and the ‘a’ and you’re left with ‘c’. That’s what happened to ‘Mac William’ (‘Son of William’), which in time became ‘Cwilliam’ or ‘Quilliam’. If we had used Gaelic spelling, all those surnames starting with ‘K’ or ‘Qu’ would have started with ‘C’ - from ‘Mac’.

Manx surnames: Bridson

An old Manx surname that doesn’t start with C, K or Q! This is actually an English translation of the Manx Mylvreeshey, which originally came from Mac Guilley Vreeshey - The Son of the Servant of Brigid. The Christian Brigid was said to have been the Abbess at Kildare in the 6th century. She has a parish named after her in the Isle of Man. Stories about the Christian Brigid merged with those about the pagan goddess Brigid, the patron of poets and craftsmen.

The name means ‘dark’, from Gaelic ‘ciar’ / ‘keeir’. This was a widely scattered family in the Isle of Man - maybe the different English spellings of the name reflects this.

All these come from Gaelic Mac Thomais or Mac Thomáis, ‘Son of Thomas’ - equivalent to English ‘Thom(p)son’. The surname Comish was associated with the south of the Isle of Man and Camaish with the north. The principal seat of the Comish family was Ballacomish in Kirk Arbory, while the main seat of the Camaish faimily was Ballacamaish in Kirk Andreas.
There are no Camaish’s at all in the present Isle of Man phonebook, and of the eleven entries for Comish only three are in the south!

Manx surnames: Christian

This is a Gaelic-Norse name, coming from Mac Kristinn, meaning Son of the Christian. When most of the Vikings were still pagan, they called a Viking who had converted to Christianity ‘Kristinn’ - and there is evidence they made fun of such converts.
Historically, the most famous Christian was William Christian, or Illiam Dhone, who was executed in 1663. Illiam Dhone is credited with preserving Manx independence.
